What is Gum Recession?

Gum recession is the downward displacement of the gum tissue surrounding the tooth root due to destruction, exposing the root surface to the oral cavity.

Clinically, this causes teeth to appear longer than normal and makes the root surface, lacking its protective enamel layer, more sensitive. Gum recession is usually caused by incorrect and harsh brushing techniques, untreated gum disease (periodontitis), or misaligned teeth.

Tissue recession not only creates an aesthetic problem but also weakens the supporting tissues of the tooth, paving the way for tooth loosening and loss in the long term. Recession detected in the early stages can be stopped with proper hygiene education and minor surgical interventions.
